Description

Latin: Amelanchier canadensis

Other common names: Shadbush serviceberry, thicket shadblow, shadbush, oblongleaf juneberry, downy serviceberry, Chuckle Berry, Currant-tree, Sugarplum

Mature Height: 25 ft.

Soil / Climate: Prefers moist soils in swamps and thickets.

Notes: Leaves are 1.5 - 2.5 inches, oblong-elliptic in shape, and finely toothed.  Autumn colors are deep orange to red.  Flowers are white with long petals, and bloom in dense groups.  Fruit is dark purple, 1/3 inch in diameter, and is often used in pies and jellies. The shrub is called the juneberry because the fruit ripens in June.  It is used as a medicinal plant, and an ornamental plant. It is sometimes made into bonsai.

Wildlife: Fruit is eaten by ruffed grouse, dove, several varieties of woodpeckers, and many more birds.
