Description

Latin: Cornus florida

Mature Height: 15-40 ft spreads 12-20 ft. Medium growth rate of 13-24" per year.

Soil / Climate: likes moist, rich soils.  Can tolerate sun or shade.  Can be susceptable to frost damage in the northern half of Michigan's lower peninsula.

Notes: Often used as an ornamental.  Dark green wedge shaped leaves that turn rose, to scarlet and violet in autumn.  Flowers are small yellowing clusters surrounded by white petals.  Berries are scarlet colored.

Wildlife: Very wide range of wildlife rely on the fruit.  Birds include turkey, ruffed grouse, bobwhite, a variety of woodpeckers, and many others.
