Description

Latin: Viburnum prunifolium

Zones: 3 - 9

Other common names: Blackhaw, Stagbush, Sweethaw

Mature Height/spread: 12 -15 ft. high/8-10' spread. Slow to medium growth rate (less than 12-24" per year).

Soil / Climate: Tolerates a wide variety of soils and climates. Blackhaw is very easy to transplant and grow. It likes full sun to partial shade.

Notes: Leaves are dark green in the summer, and reddish in the fall.  Spring flowers are white.  Makes a great hedge plant. Fruit is dark purple to black. Landscape Use is as a screen, to attract birds and for flowering effect. The fruit hangs until winter, becomes edible after being frosted and then eaten by birds. The primary use of black haw today is pain relief.
